03/24/07: Worldbike
The Worldbike is our open challenge to the bicycle industry to make bicycles for the needs of developing world customers.
Function:
The Worldbike replaces walking and public transportation as the best public transportation option in the developing world. It will be used to transport people, children, agricultural produce, wares, trees, bread, milk, and tools. It's the every man's bike in the developing world, a place where people can't afford to buy pickup trucks. They need a bike that hauls. They need a Worldbike.
Cost:
$150
Requirements:
This bicycle is designed to be produced in the bicycle manufacturing centers of the world. India, China, Taiwan. It can be made in the same factories that are currently pumping out cheap mountain bikes that sell in WalMart for $79. With volume like that, a Worldbike may eventually cost $100. If you can make a $100 laptop, you should be able to make a $100 bicycle for the developing world.
